Visiting this stadium was one of the highlights of our trip to Denmark. FC Midtjylland is one of the most successful Danish clubs. The club has been only active for a tad over 20 years, being founded in 1999. It was a merge of two fierce rivals in Herning named Ikast FS and Herning Fremad. Although these two clubs have been strong rivals for decades, they never reached the high level that was expected. In 2000, after only its first season, the club clinched promotion to the Danish Superliga while grabbing a record of 76 points along the campaign.
From there onwards, the club never looked back. Up to this date, FC Midtjylland won twice the Danish Superliga while ending runners-up another three times. Besides, they ended being four-time finalists of the Danish Cup and managing to win it on penalties against FC Brondby in 2018/2019 season.
Perhaps the peak where FC Midtjylland made a name for themselves amongst European football fans was during the 2015/2016 season. The club managed to advance to the round of 32 stage of the Europa League, emerging victorious by a score of 2-1 against European giants Manchester United. They ultimately were eliminated in the same stage by an aggregate score of 6-3, but it sure was a day to remember for the home fans at the MCH Arena.
Hottest Games to Attend at The MCH Arena
All games are worth attending, but some more than others for both FC Midtjylland fans and the neutrals. The club’s ultimate rival is Viborg FF. Sitting Only 50km apart, the clash between the two teams was named ‘The Battle of the Hatred’. Unfortunately, Viborg FF currently plays in the Danish First Division. Therefore, the latest fierce clash played between the two teams happened back in 2017.
The largest attendance recorded lately was against Brondby and Copenhagen, the latter match recording an attendance of 11,422 during their last meeting, in an 11,809 seater stadium. Just imagine the atmosphere when only 387 seats were empty on the day!
Getting to the MCH Stadium by car is relatively easy. On arrival, you’ll find a number of huge parking lots where you can safely park your car.
Local public transport in Herning is only made up of a network of buses. The most convenient stop to the MCH Arena would be Herning Messecenter St. Stopping at this stop requires you getting on either bus 6 or 81. From there, the stadium lies only 1.3km (15-minute walk) away.
Coming in by train from one of the neighbouring towns or cities enables you to also stop at the same mentioned stop above. Services R and RX stop at the Herning Messecenter train station.
Match Tickets & Prices
Tickets can be bought from the official website and are usually around €18 for a league game. Compared to Denmark’s cost of living, which is rather high compared to the rest of Europe, that’s a relatively cheap fee. You can access the fixture list here.
Where To Sit At The MCH Arena?
On our visit, we sat at the Faxe Kondi Tribunen. It was quite packed and the atmosphere was nice, following the Ultras situated on the left-hand side from where we were sitting. For the best atmosphere, cheering the team with the Ultras requires you to get a ticket at the CC Contractor Tribunen. That’s where we’re staying next time we get the chance to visit the MCH Arena once again!
Where to Drink?
Finally, time for a pint! Unfortunately, there are no pubs within close proximity of the stadium. If you want to have some early drinks, the best solution would be to do some bar hopping at the centre of Herning, just before catching one of the buses to the stadium.
Upon arriving at the stadium, you will find numerous trucks and stalls selling beer and food bites. There’s an awesome atmosphere with football-themed games for kids and a very good chance of meeting some of the FC Midtjylland players.
Speaking of That, Where is the Best Spot For a Chance to Meet Some Players?
That would be at the passageway between the MCH Arena’s main (front) entrance and the huge parking lot. Players arrive around two hours before kick-off and park their expensive clean cars in that parking lot. They’ll have no choice but to pass exactly from where you’re standing. They’ll be more than happy to stop by for a picture, just like USA International Bill Hamid did as we waited patiently for him to arrive!
